State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi: Uphold Multilateralism and Unite Against the Outbreak
2020/03/31

State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Foreign Policy Adviser to the President of France Emmanuel Bonne on the phone on 30 March.

Wang noted that the appeal made by the two Presidents for global solidarity against the outbreak at the Extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit injected important impetus into global cooperation on COVID-19. As the outbreak spreads around the world, the international community must strengthen confidence and work in concert, instead of each minding its own business and going its own way. That's why despite a large domestic demand, China remains open on the export of medical supplies. With the belief that helping other countries fight the outbreak is helping itself, China will continue to provide assistance to France to facilitate its purchase of medical supplies and equipment.

Wang pointed out that the outbreak once again reminds us that countries today all live in a global village and are all members of the human community with a shared future. We should hold high the banner of multilateralism and tackle global challenges together. The act of unilateralism or self-supremacy, no matter what form it takes, is not the right way forward and will find no popular support. China stands ready to work with France to strengthen multilateral cooperation and coordination, and jointly respond to the challenge of the outbreak. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China takes a positive attitude to all initiatives that are conducive to international cooperation against the outbreak and will stay in communication with France and all other parties. The immediate priority at the moment is to fully implement the important consensus reached at the Extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit.

Bonne said that France and China share highly aligned positions. In view of the rapid spread of the virus, the international community needs to strengthen solidarity and coordination to tide over the difficult times together. He expressed appreciation for China's support of medical supplies to France, and hailed it as a reflection of the deep friendship and sound relations between the two countries. He also expressed the hope for continued support from China in the purchase of medical equipment. France is satisfied with the outcomes of the Extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit and stands ready to work with China to defend multilateralism, promote cooperation in the UN Security Council and under other multilateral frameworks, and strengthen third-party cooperation in Africa in areas such as medical health and economic development. He expressed confidence that after the virus is defeated, the high-level exchanges and practical cooperation between the two sides will witness greater progress.
