On April 15th, the famous Icelandic newspaper Fréttablaðið published a signed article by Ambassador Jin Zhijian entitled Fighting COVID-19 Together.

The full text is as follows:

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, I have been closely following the footprint of the pandemic and stay tuned to the press conference of Icelandic civil defense every afternoon. It is sad to see the recent widespread of pandemic in Europe and the United States, and heartbreaking to witness the great loss of lives of the senior, the young and even children. As a citizen of the global village and a diplomat, I shoulder great responsibility in this ongoing battle. For the past few weeks, my colleagues at the embassy and I are doing our best to facilitate Iceland's purchase of the most demanding medical supplies from China and we are happy to learn that the first 17 tons of supplies have arrived in Iceland on April 9. We have also managed to contact some Chinese enterprises and institutions to donate masks and other medical supplies to Iceland. We sincerely hope our efforts can become part of the solutions in Iceland's battle against the pandemic, and we can contribute to save more lives and protect the healthcare workers at the forefront of the battle.

I took noticed that some Icelandic media and people also followed closely the pandemic in China. Some of them may have different views on whether the virus originated in China and whether the Chinese government shared the information with the world in a timely manner. Facing the COVID-19, the Chinese government has taken unprecedented measures and the Chinese people have suffered tremendous sacrifices, which help contain the spread of pandemic quickly in the largest developing country with 1.4 billion people. By doing so, China has made important contributions to global public health security. At present, China is faced with the arduous task of "preventing imported cases from abroad and resurgence at home", and we still need to be highly vigilant. China was the first country to report the novel coronavirus outbreak to the WHO when it occurred in Wuhan, but that does not mean that the virus originated in Wuhan. The origin of virus is a serious scientific issue that should be addressed by scientists and medical experts. No conclusion has been made and I believe time will tell. Since the outbreak, China has been acting in a timely, open, transparent and responsible manner in sharing relevant information and experience to contain the coronavirus with the world. China's approach has won wide recognition and praise from WHO and the international community. Any stigmatization of China or politicisation of COVID-19 to shift the blame cannot dispel the virus, nor can it be a justified excuse for the negligence with some politicians.

Viruses know no borders, no races, and no social systems. The pandemic is sweeping through the world with very limited time for the human beings to respond. The international community should stay united to overcome the difficulties rather than suspect and attack each other. Action is needed more than empty promises. China is willing to cooperate with all countries to fight COVID-19 together. So far, the Chinese government has provided or is providing supplies within its capacity to 127 countries and four international organizations, including surgical masks, protective gears and testing reagents. China donated $20 million to the WHO, sent 13 medical teams to 11 countries and held over 70 video conferences with experts from more than 150 countries and international organizations. China has no interest in the so called mask diplomacy. We only want to make our due contributions as a responsible major country to the international community.

Only through solidarity and cooperation can mankind overcome the pandemic and pursue life and security assurance. I hope the ongoing battle may allow us to better understand the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, and work together to promote global development and safeguard the well beings for all. I am looking forward to the day that we bid farewell to the darkness of the pandemic and see the light at the end of tunnel with the final victory.
