On September 11, the famous Icelandic newspaper Fréttablaðið published a signed article by Ambassador Jin Zhijian entitled Sound China-US relations is Good for World Peace and Development.

The full text is as follows:

Recently, some US politicians viciously attacked the Communist Party of China and China's political system. They have deliberately distorted and even attempted to write off the history of China-US relations for the past nearly 50 years. They have gone to great lengths to portray China as a major rival, trying to drag China-US relations into confrontation and conflict, which have drawn world attention. The way China and the United States choose to live with each other not only concerns the fundamental interests of both sides, but also plays a key role in world peace and development.

Over four decades ago, leaders of China and the United States made the handshake across the vast Pacific Ocean. What made this possible was that both countries adhered to the principle of mutual respect and seeking common ground while putting aside ideological differences. Over the past 40 years and more since the two countries established diplomatic ties, several generations of Chinese and Americans have worked together to advance China-US relations. As a result, bilateral ties have become one of the most deeply interwoven relationships in the world with broadest cooperation areas and most extensive common interests. Bilateral trade volume has increased by over 250 times since the early days of diplomatic ties and takes up one-fifth of the global total. Two-way investment has jumped from almost zero to nearly US$240 billion, and annual two-way visits by the two peoples have reached five million. The two countries have had close communication and coordination on important international affairs such as the Korean Peninsula, Afghanistan and the Middle East , delivering tremendous benefits to their peoples and contributing significantly to world peace, stability, and prosperity. Past experiences show that China and the US stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. Cooperation is the best choice for both sides.

The world is undergoing changes unseen in a century, accelerated by the sudden onslaught of COVID-19. Humanity needs to once again make a crucial choice, a choice between progress and regression, between solidarity and division, and between openness and seclusion. In today's globalization, countries are interconnected economically. Progress is made in science and technology with each passing day. Mankind shares a common future in a world that has become a global village where countries are interdependent on each other. The new Cold War between China and US will only plunge the world into chaos and division again, which goes against the trend of our times and the interests of all parties.

The fundamental question for the China-US relationship is: as China has deeply integrated itself into the current international system, how does the US view and whether it will accept the plain truth of China's rapid development, is the US ready to accommodate China and live with a country with a different history, culture and system? The differences or contradictions between China and the US are not a struggle for power, status, or social system, but the persistence of multilateralism or unilateralism, and the advocacy of win-win cooperation or zero-sum game. The two countries should make use of each other's advantages instead of decoupling with each other, integrate with each other instead of isolating from each other, and conduct mutually beneficial cooperation instead of creating conflicts and confrontations.

In the context of the raging pandemic and the consequently flagging global economy, China and the US should make the right choice. China and the US should work together toward a new model of major-country relations featuring non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, and promote a China-US relationship based on coordination, cooperation and stability. China will make unrelentingly efforts in this regard.

To safeguard and stabilize China-US relations is the call of the people and the trend of the times. We wish US decision-makers could recognize the trend of the times and work with China. We also wish that all countries could stand firm on the right side of history and bring more stability to this complex and fluid world. United, we can build together an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity.
