Embassy of China in Iceland Holds Reception for the 66th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China

On 24th September 2015, Embassy of China in Iceland held a reception for the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Present at the reception were Mr. Stefán Haukur Jóhannesson, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Ms. Anna Lilja Gunnarsdóttir, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Welfare of Iceland, and Ms. Ásta R. Jóhannesdóttir, former Speaker of the Parliament of Iceland, together with over 260 government officials, parliamentarians, diplomats, overseas Chinese, staff of Chinese enterprises, Chinese students in Iceland and friends from different circles.

In his speech, Ambassador Zhang Weidong reviewed the achievements in social and economic development of the People's Republic of China since its establishment, especially in the past year. He said that China's economy, in the first half of this year, grew by 7% and contributed more than 30% to the world economic growth. China's economic structure is rapidly improving and new economic growth areas are rapidly taking shape. China's economy will stay on a steady course with fairly fast growth in a positive direction. China is pushing forward its new type of industrialization, informatization, and modernization of agriculture. China has a high savings rate, a huge consumption potential, a hard-working population and a rising proportion of middle-income people. China's service sector has an enormous space and offers a big market with great potential. China is not and will not be a source of crisis for the world economy, but a real source of strength for world economic growth.

Ambassador Zhang pointed out that this year also marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of World Anti-fascist War and the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The most valuable enlightenment given by the World Anti-Fascist War is that we must unswervingly safeguard peace. China will firmly continue its peaceful development and will, together with other countries in the world, build new international relations with win-win at the core, and make unremitting endeavor for a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity.

Ambassador Zhang spoke highly of China-Iceland relations. He said that the two countries' cooperation in various fields has achieved a lot during the past 44 years since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties. In recent years, exchanges in all levels have been frequent and political mutual trust has been strengthened. Bilateral economic and trade cooperation has strengthened significantly. People-to-people exchanges have been increased. Next year marks the 45th anniversary of China-Iceland diplomatic ties. Both countries are ready to make joint efforts to promote bilateral friendly cooperation and strive to achieve greater progress.

The reception was permeated with warm, friendly and happy atmosphere. Guests spoke highly of great achievements of China's social and economic developments, expressing their willingness to contribute to Iceland-China relations and the friendship between the two peoples. Some Chinese and Icelandic Students gave wonderful performances at the reception.
