Mr. He Guoqiang's Visit to Iceland

Mr. He Guoqiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party and Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, paid an official goodwill visit to the Republic of Iceland from June 8th  to 10th. Major members of the delegation include several ministers and Ambassador Su Ge.

On June 9th, Mr. He Guoqiang and Össur Skarphedinsson, Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, witnessed the signing of three bilateral documents.

    1. The People's Bank of China and the Central Bank of Iceland signed a bilateral currency swap agreement.The total amount of the agreement is 3.5billion CNY/66billion ISK. The agreement has 3 year maturity and can be extended on conditions both parties agree. The bilateral currency agreement is a manifestation of deep trust, good will and well-developed friendly relations between China and Iceland.  It is based on equality, mutual benefits and respect.  It is a step towards strengthening positive relations between the two countries, as it will significantly facilitate bilateral business dealings and will enhance the bilateral economic and trade ties.
    2. The National Power company of Iceland, Landsvirkjun, signed an Memorandum of understanding with China International Water & Electric Corporation and Export-Import Bank of China.  While the Declaration does not involve any obligations on the part of the three parties, it does affirm CWE's interest in bidding for construction work at Búdarháls Power Plant as well as Landsvirkjun's interest in receiving an offer from the company. Furthermore, Exim Bank states its interest in funding some of the project contracts that CWE may undertake for Landsvirkjun once the project has been put out to tender.
    3. Enex China/Geysir Green Energy signed a framework agreement with Sinopec Star Co. on establishing a joint venture corporation, which will be a platform for nation-wide geothermal development in China.  Enex Kina (Enex China) and Sinopec share a common objective to promote further development of the renewable energy sector, and to develop geothermal district heating services on a broader scale in China. Enex China is a subsidiary of Geysir Green Energy that has built up two geothermal district heating projects in Shaanxi and Hebei province in a Joint Venture with Sinopec Star. The existing geothermal district heating systems in China will be significantly enlarged.

Mr. He first met with Mr. Össur Skarphedinsson, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Eoreign Trade, discussing the friendly and cooperative relations between China and Iceland. Then, Mr. He met with the Icelandic Prime Minister, H.E. Johanna Sigurdardottir, and had a friendly convasation.  Mr. He conveyed to the Prime Minister greetings from the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.  Last but not least, Mr. He met with the President of Iceland, H.E. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. Mr.  He conveyed to President Grímsson greetings from Chinese Presidnet Hu Jintao.  Representatives of the Chinese delegation were honored to attend a luncheon hosted by President Grímsson.

The atmosphere of the meetings was both friendly and cordial. Both the guests and hosts exchanged views on international and regional issues. They discussed ways to enlarge co-operation to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relation in the coming year. Both sides agree that the above-mentioned agreements and MOU, on finance, technology and energy cooperation, are meritorious and mutually beneficial, which manifest deepened trust, good will and friendship. Both agree to work together to further strenthen bilateral relations between China and Iceland in all fields.
