2018-09-29

Distinguished guests,

My Dear colleagues from the Diplomatic Corps

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good Afternoon!

Thank you all for joining us in celebrating the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

In three days which is October 1st, we will usher in the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. For a country with over 5000 years of civilization, 69 years is a very short period in our history, yet in this period the Chinese nation has achieved a tremendous transformation. China has grown from being weak and poor to an independent nation, it has stood up, grown rich, and is becoming strong. Last year China's GDP exceeded 12.7 trillion US dollars, about 15% of the world economy, contributing more than 30% of global economic growth. China has become the world's second largest economy, the largest industrial producer, the largest trader of goods and the holder of the largest foreign exchange reserves. China's economic structure has undergone major changes, consumption has become the main driving force for economic growth with a contribution of over 60%. Innovation-driven industries such as manned space flight, deep sea exploration, mobile payment, and sharing economy are leading a global trend. Resolute measures are taken to improve people's living standards, while poverty alleviation has made decisive progress. It is firmly believed that China will gain a complete success with fight against poverty by 2020. The rule of law has been comprehensively advanced, and the democratic rights and interests of the Chinese people are effectively protected. The environment has seen gradual improvement. Encouraging progress has been made in green development. China is marching forward in accordance with the grand blueprint drawn by the 19th CPC National Congress.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up of China. It is well proved that without reform, China would not have come so far; nor would she have a future. As China's second revolution, reform and opening up has not only profoundly changed the country but also greatly influenced the whole world. Human history shows that openness leads to progress while seclusion leaves one behind. The world has become a global village. China will not close its door to the world; we will only become more and more open. As a participant, beneficiary and a staunch supporter of the current international system, China puts forward the vision of creating a new form of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice and win-win cooperation, and creating a community of shared future for mankind with an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity. To fulfill this purpose, China asks for a fairer and more rational global governance system. In such light we come up with the Belt and Road Initiative, committed to build a new pattern of international cooperation of wide consultation, joint construction and shared benefits, providing the Chinese solutions to the reform of global governance system.

China-Iceland relations maintain sound development this year. The state leaders of the two countries have exchanged letters on various occasions, pointing out the way for further development in bilateral relations. Iceland has received a number of senior officials from central and local governments of China, including the Vice Chairman Zhang Qingli of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The speaker of Althingi Sigfússon and Minister for Foreign Affairs Thórdarson have paid successful visits to China respectively this year, which greatly promoted the practical cooperation between the two countries. The past 5 years also witnessed many fruitful outcomes since the signing of China Iceland Free Trade Agreement, which has brought benefits to our two peoples. According to the Icelandic statistics, the bilateral trade volume between China and Iceland from January to July this year amounts to 423 million U.S. dollars with an increase of 51.6%. The cooperation in geo-thermal energy, Arctic affairs, tourism have been further promoted. Technology of geo-thermal energy from Iceland has been more widely utilized in China, the Arctic observatory jointly built by China and Iceland in Karholl will have its launching ceremony next month, and more and more Chinese tourists have chosen Iceland as their destinations. Meanwhile the Belt and Road Initiatives have gained more awareness and positive feedbacks from Icelandic government and society. The cultural exchanges have been more active and diversified, which help laying a more solid foundation for the friendship between the two peoples. China and Iceland also have close cooperation on many international issues like safeguarding world peace, promoting common development, protecting environment and tackling climate changes. We firmly believe that China-Iceland relations will see a bright future and I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all friends who have supported China and made contributions to the China Iceland relations.

Next year will be the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. With the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people will forge ahead with one mind, make down-to-earth and innovative efforts, so as to make new progress in fulfilling our historical mission, which is to realize the two centenary goals and the Chinese Dream of great national rejuvenation.

Now, please join me in a toast.

To the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China

To the bright future of China-Iceland relations

To world peace and prosperity

To the health and happiness of all of you present

Cheers.
