Embassy of China in Iceland Holds Reception Marking the 45th Anniversary of China-Iceland Diplomatic Relations

On 12 December 2016, Ambassador Zhang Weidong held reception for the 45th anniversary of China-Iceland diplomatic relations. Present at the reception were Ms. Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Mr. Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture of Iceland, Mr.Illugi Gunnarsson, Minister of Education, Science and Culture, Mr. Stefán Haukur Jóhannesson, Permanent Secretary of State, Ms. Ásta Magnúsdóttir, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Ms. Anna Lilja Gunnarsdottir, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Welfare,Ms. Ásta R. Jóhannesdóttir, former speaker of Althingi. Some 200 guests including government officials, parliamentarians, foreign diplomats, overseas Chinese, overseas Chinese students and friends from different circles also attend the reception.

In his speech, Ambassador Zhang said China and Iceland officially established diplomatic relations on 8th December 1971.With 45 years' development, the relationship between China and Iceland has become stable and fruitful, and reached its maturity. He emphasized that based on the principle of equality and respect, mutual win-win cooperation, China and Iceland with different history and culture, different social systems, economic scale and development stage, can co-exist in a harmonious way to advance common interests.

Foreign Minister Lilya Alfreðsdóttir, in her speech, spoke highly of the steady and stable development of Sino-Icelandic cooperation in areas like politics, economy, trade, geo-thermal energy, Arctic affairs and culture. She also talked about her visit to China as a tourist in 1994, saying that she personally witnessed substantial progress of China-Iceland bilateral relations during the past two decades. She expressed confidence that with the efforts of two sides, the Iceland-China relations would be further strengthened.

Mr. Arnþór Helgason, chairman of the Icelandic Chinese Cultural Society also made a speech, reviewing the cultural cooperation and exchanges between the two countries since 1950s.

All the guests present witnessed the signing of Letter of Intent of writing a history book on the relations between China and Iceland. Ambassador Zhang also introduced the newly published book entitled Important Bilateral Agreements and Documents between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Iceland. Each of the guests received a commemorative stamped envelope marking the 45th anniversary of China-Iceland diplomatic relations .

The reception was permeated with warm and friendly atmosphere. Guests spoke highly of the remarkable development of bilateral relations, and expressed their confidence in bright future of the mutual relations .
