Book Exhibition Marking the 45th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Iceland Opens

On 12th November 2016, the opening ceremony of the book exhibition in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Iceland was held in National and University Library of Iceland, Reykjavik, which was hosted by National Librarian Ingibjörg Sverrisdóttir. The exhibition was jointly sponsored by China International Publishing Group(CIPG) , the Embassy of China in Iceland, the Icelandic Chinese Cultural Society, Northern Light Confucius Institute of University of Iceland. Present at the event were H.E. Zhang Weidong, Chinese Ambassador to Iceland, H.E. Gunnar Gunnarsson, former Icelandic Ambassador to China, Mr. Yu Tao, President of China Pictorial,Mr. Arnþór Helgason, Chairman of the Icelandic Chinese Cultural Society, Mr. Magnus Bjornsson, director of the Northern Lights Confucius Institute, together with some 100 Icelandic friends from all walks of life and diplomats in Iceland.

Ambassador Zhang delivered a speech at the reception. He said there are thousands of miles in distance from China to Iceland and there exist differences in national circumstances, culture and history, but the peoples of China and Iceland share a long history of traditional friendship. Ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations on December 8 1971, the two countries' bilateral cultural exchanges, like a tiger equipped with wings, has been growing from strength to strength,and brought new vigor and vitality into bilateral relationship. The cooperation between Chinese and Icelandic press and publication sectors has grown in strength in those years, serves as a bridge for mutual understanding and friendship between Chinese and Icelandic peoples. He believed that the exhibition would become a new milestone of friendly cultural exchanges between China and Iceland , laying a solid foundation for our future cooperation, expanding cultural exchanges, and enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

H.E. Gunnar Gunnarsson, former Icelandic Ambassador to China,on behalf of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in his speech, said that nevertheless Iceland and China come opposite in many different ways, the two countries have managed to build over the course of the last 45 years a harmonious partnership that could serve as a model of how big and small can find common ground. The exchanges and cooperation between the two countries have made great progress and brought tangible benefits to the two peoples.The two countries signed the first free Trade Agreement between China and a European country in 2013, and promote scientific research in the Arctic, share broad prospects of cooperation of geothermal energy projects.There is considerable room for further development of fishery trade,and more and more young Icelanders are studying Chinese and get to know each other better. He hopes with the efforts of the two sides, the Iceland- China relations will be further strengthened.

Mr. Yu Tao, president of China Pictorial,read the congratulatory letter on behalf of Mr. Zhou Mingwei ,President of China International Publishing Group (CIPG).The letter said with its unique strengths in publicity and publication, CIPG will actively contribute to cooperation in publishing deals between China and Iceland. He hoped that representatives of the media, publication and cultural circles will increase exchanges and broaden cooperation in innovative new ways,encourage more people of the two countries to visit each other, get to know more of each other, develop a better mutual understanding, and bring China and Iceland closer together.

The opening ceremony ended in a friendly atmosphere with the guests visiting the exhibition with great interest.The exhibition will be on show until April 2,2017.
