On 1st August 2016, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory telegram to Guðni Th. Jóhannesson on the occasion of his inauguration as the President of Iceland. The full text is as follows:

On the occasion of your inauguration as the President of the Republic of Iceland, I wish to extend my sincere congratulations and best wishes to you. Wish Your Excellency great achievements in performing such a high post.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Iceland diplomatic ties. In the past 45 years, the bilateral relations between China and Iceland have maintained good momentum of development, which is well manifested by our frequent high-level exchanges, fruitful cooperative results in various fields and ever-deepening mutual understanding and friendship between our peoples. I highly value the development of China-Iceland relations. I am willing to make joint efforts with Your Excellency to push forward the bilateral relations constantly.

I also wish to take this opportunity to congratulate Your Excellency for the historic success of the Men's National Football Team of Iceland at the 2016 UEFA European Championship.
