Cultural Activities Marking the 45th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Iceland Successfully Held

On 12th June 2016, cultural activities in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Iceland were held in Harpa, Reykjavik. The cultural activities include opening ceremony, photo exhibition on Chinese Children, lecture introducing the Chinese music and a concert of Chinese and Icelandic music. The activities were jointly sponsored by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles(CFLAC), the Embassy of China in Iceland, the Icelandic Chinese Cultural Society, the Federation of Icelandic Artists and Harpa International Music Festival, in association with China Musicians Association, China Photographers Association and Wuhan Conservatory of Music, presented by the Harpa International Music Academy and the Yangtze Melody Soloists Ensemble of Wuhan Conservatory of Music.

Present at the event were H.E. Zhang Weidong, Chinese Ambassador to Iceland, H.E. Lilya Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, H.E. Stefán Haukur Jóhannesson, Permanent Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, H.E. Ásta R. Jóhannesdóttir, former speaker of Althingi, Ms. Una Strand Viðarsdóttir, senior advisor of Icelandic Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Mr. Arnþór Helgason, Chairman of the Icelandic Chinese Cultural Society, Ms. Kolbrún Halldórsdóttir, Chairman of the Federation of Icelandic Artists, together with some 300 government officials, diplomats, entrepreneurs, and Chinese and Icelandic friends from all walks of life.

In his remarks, Ambassador Zhang said there are thousands of miles in distance from China to Iceland and there exist differences on national circumstances, culture and history, but the peoples of China and Iceland share traditional friendship. Ever since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1971, Sino-Icelandic relations have developed constantly and steadily. Contacts of various levels and people to people exchanges have been increased. There has been a variety of bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, culture, education, Arctic affairs and so on. The fruitful cooperation has brought benefits to both countries and peoples. On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic ties, Chinese cultural envoys brought Chinese artistic works to Iceland, and they will perform together with Icelandic artists to demonstrate the friendly cooperation among the artists of the two countries and the profound feelings of the two peoples. He believed the cultural activities would widen the bridge that connects our souls and deepen our two peoples' mutual understanding and friendship. They would also serve for the mutual learning and the strengthening of exchanges between the Chinese and Icelandic culture, thus contributing to the prosperity and development of the world culture.

H.E. Lilya Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, in her speech, spoke highly of the steady and stable development of Sino-Icelandic relations in the areas of politics, economy, trade, geo-thermal energy, Arctic affairs, culture and so on. The Mutual understanding between Iceland and China has been promoted, and the two countries have been supporting each other in many issues. She hopes with the efforts of two sides, the Icelandic-China relations will be further strengthened.

The photo exhibition puts the spotlight on Chinese Children, presenting a total of 40 pictures. It consists of three parts: "Change", "Love and Care" and "Childlike Innocence". Through these pictures, people can see the changes about the life of Chinese children, and the love and care given by the society to the children. The exhibition lasts till 14th June.

Understanding the Chinese Music Culture by the Guzheng Music" High Mountain and Flowing Water", a lecture given by Prof. Gao Yan, vice president of Wuhan Conservatory of Music, helps the Icelandic audience better understand the spirit of the Chinese Music and Culture.

The Chinese and Iceland music concert presents 13 pieces of music which are representative works of China. The Chinese and Icelandic artists performed some Chinese and Icelandic music together. Their fantastic performance was warmly received by the audience and echoed with enthusiastic applauses.
