2015-08-28

On 28th August, Embassy of China in Iceland, Icelandic Chinese Cultural Society (KÍM), Icelandic Chinese Trade Council (ÍKV) and Association of Chinese in Iceland (ACI) co-hosted a seminar in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-Fascist War. Some 50 guests attended the seminar. Among them were Ambassador Zhang Weidong, Ambassador of China to Iceland, Ambassador Gunnar Pálsson, Chief of Protocol of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Mr. Arnþór Helgason, Chairman of KÍM, Mr. Ársæll Harðarson, Chairman of ÍKV, and representatives of overseas Chinese and Chinese students in Iceland.

In his keynote speech, Ambassador Zhang pointed out that as the largest and most destructive war in human history, World War II caused unprecedented havoc to human civilization. Meanwhile, the victory of the World Anti-fascist War has had significant and profound influence over the advance of human civilization. China was the oriental main battle field of the World Anti-fascist War and China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression made great contributions for the final victory of the war. At the same time, China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression received strong support and help from many countries and friends across the world. Chinese government and people will never forget them.

Ambassador Zhang said that after 14 years of bloody battles, Chinese people eventually defeated Japanese aggressors, which declared the complete failure of Japanese militarism, and the ultimate victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression of China and the World Anti-Fascist War. The victory of China's War of Resistance was the victory of the nationwide war of resistance and was the glory of all the Chinese both in China and overseas. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression of China, the Communist Party of China (CPC) always played a role as the mainstay of Chinese people's fight against Japanese invasion and was the key to the victory of the war.

Ambassador Zhang stressed that People all over the world paid huge price for the victory of World Anti-Fascist War. It was a hard-won result and we must cherish it. Based on UN and principles of UN Charter, the post-war international order serves as the cornerstone of world peace and stability. It must be respected. Nowadays, a small number of Japanese right-wing forces distort the history and recklessly challenge peaceful order established after World War II. They not only seriously damage Japan's relations with China and other victim countries, but also pose a threat to regional and world peace and stability.

Ambassador Zhang said that both Chinese and Icelandic people were making contributions to the victory of the war respectively in their battle field 70 years ago. Since the end of the war 70 years before, China-Iceland relations have made a lot of achievements. Both peoples truly enjoy the benefits of a peaceful international environment and cherish the hard-won peace. Chinese people always cherish peace. China will firmly continue its peaceful development and will cooperate with Iceland and other peace-loving countries to endeavour for a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity.

Mr. Arnþór Helgason, Chairman of KÍM, said that Japan's aggression caused a huge catastrophe to Chinese people. Chinese people sacrificed a lot and made great contributions to the victory of the war. Japan should introspect on its war crime and make commitment to promote regional and world peace and stability.

Mr. Davíð Tong Li, Chairman of ACI, said that the World War II was a disaster for human beings. The cause of world peace has made significant improvement since the past 70 years, but some places in the world remain in unrest. All countries should work together to achieve peace and development of the whole world.

Mr. Magnús Björnsson, Icelandic director of Northern Light Confucius Institute, said that China, during the World War II, was a main force of the World Anti-Fascist War and played an important role for the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. We must draw lessons from that war and cooperate to development peacefully, thus preventing the war tragedy from repeating.

Mr. G. Jökull Gíslason, guset lecturer of the University of Iceland, said that the Japanese militarism started its invasion to China as early as late 19th century. Chinese people fought against its aggression for a long time. During the World War II, China was the main battle field of the World Anti-Fascist War. The whole nation united as one to resist against invaders, totally defeated the Japanese militarism and achieved the victory, thus pushing forward the final victory of the World Anti-fascist War.

Mr. Jia Yucheng, Chinese director of Northern Light Confucius Institute, and Mr. Yi Zhiqian, chairman of Association of Chinese Students in Iceland, said that as young generation, they will try best to learn more about the history of China´s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and work hard to contribute to prevent world war, safeguard world peace and promote world social and economic development.

Many guests pointed out that today's seminar made them know more about the history of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the suffering of Chinese people during the war and China's great contributions to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. It especially enhanced European people´s knowledge on the oriental battle field of the World Anti-Fascist War. China has made significant contributions to world peace and stability since the end of World War II 70 year before and always been a main force for promoting world peace and development. They expressed the view that everyone must remember the history, cherish peace, create a better future and endeavour to realize long-lasting world peace and prosperity.
