(30 September 2013)
2013-09-30

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good evening.

Tonight, you join us in the Chinese Embassy for this special occasion to celebrate the 64th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. On behalf of the Embassy of China in Iceland, I have the honor to extend our warm welcome and thanks for your presence.

On 1st October of 64 years ago, the People's Republic of China was proclaimed, ushering in a new era for the development of the Chinese Nation. During the past 64 years, especially the past 34 years since the initiation of reform and opening up policy, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, Chinese people of all ethnic groups have overcome difficulties one after another, and made brilliant achievements in the course of modernization. Long suffered from the country's impoverishment, weakness and being bullied, all the Chinese people are whole-heartedly proud of China's progress today and are being led by the central leadership with Comrade Xi Jinping as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China to march towards the goals of establishing a moderately prosperous society in 2020 and building China into a modern socialist country by the middle of this century, the aim of which is to early realize China Dream, that is the great rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation. China Dream is the dream of peace, the dream of happiness, the dream of development and the dream of win-win achievement. China Dream is not only the dream of the Chinese people, but also the dream of people of the whole world.

We are fully aware that our future will not be so smooth. But we are in the position to meet challenges and deal with them. We also have the confidence and ability to continue to maintain China's long stable and healthy economic growth. We have the confidence and ability to continue to create the economic miracle in China.

We are fully aware that under the backgrounds of much closer relations of all countries, and our destiny and development being increasingly inter-related, China cannot develop independently without the rest of the world and the world cannot either without China. China will continue pursing independent foreign policy of peace, adhering to the path of peaceful development, exercising opening strategies of mutually beneficial cooperation and firmly safeguarding its core interests. China will also continue to develop cooperative friendly relations and cooperation with all countries in the world under the guideline of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

Ladies and gentlemen,

On the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, Sino-Icelandic relations have achieved great progress in recent years, and pragmatic cooperation has been deepened since the establishment of diplomatic relations 42 years ago. In April this year when Prime Minister of Iceland officially visited China, she met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. The leaders reached important consensus, paving the way for our future bilateral relations. During the visit, China and Iceland issued a joint statement on comprehensively deepening bilateral cooperation, and concluded a Free Trade Agreement. It is the first FTA between China and a European country, bearing important historical and practical significance. Inspired by the FTA, our bilateral trade increased by 13.3% in the first seven months of this year, which is quite highlighted. It is further encouraging that our two sides just today announced the renewal of our bilateral currency swap agreement for another three years, marking a new symbol of our ever-deepening cooperation. I am firmly convinced that by joint efforts of the two sides, Sino-Icelandic relations will go further with greater development, and bilateral cooperation will enjoy broader prospects, from which our two peoples as well as the whole world will surely benefit.

Now, please allow me to propose a toast,

to the prosperity of both China and Iceland,

to the friendship between our two peoples,

to the health of all guests,

Cheers!
