October 1st of 2020 marks the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Due to the impact of COVID-19, I could not invite my Icelandic friends from all walks of life to celebrate this moment together in person. However, I would like to commemorate this special occasion with this short article, with which we could review the past and look into the future.

The year 2020 has been far from ordinary for both China and the world. The global outbreak of COVID-19 is ravaging the world, posing enormous threat to people’s lives and health and striking a devastating blow to the economic and social development to all. Facing the grave challenge, the Chinese people stood together undaunted to fight the pandemic with great efforts and huge sacrifice, and made major strategic achievements in our response to Covid-19 in a relatively short period of time. China became one of the first countries in the world to have gotten the pandemic under control and the first major economy to recover with vibrant and resilient performance, which will surely bring confidence and opportunities for cooperation to Iceland and the rest of the world. Since the outbreak, China has participated actively in the global response to Covid-19 and acted in a timely, open, transparent and responsible manner. China reported to the WHO at the earliest time possible, and shared relevant information and experience to contain the coronavirus with over 180 countries in the world. China has provided two batches of cash support totaling US$50 million to the WHO, sent 34 medical expert teams to 32 countries, offered assistance with 283 batches to 150 countries and 4 international organizations, provided and exported medical supplies to 200 countries. China promises that COVID-19 vaccines developed by China will be made a global public good when their development is completed and they are available for use. China has and will continue to contribute its wisdom and strength to the global fight against the coronavirus.

The year 2020 will be forever remembered for the great support between China and Iceland to overcome all difficulties in this dark time. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the two governments and our peoples have offered valuable help to each other with common visions and aspirations, which opened a new chapter of our sound bilateral relations. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang of China exchanged letters with President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir of Iceland, with which both sides expressed their sincere sympathies, condolences and best wishes to each other, as well as the good willing and deternmination to fight the pandemic together. The peoples of the two countries expressed their care and support in various ways such as exchanges of letters and inspring music and video. These touching moments have created a great sensation in both lands. The Chinese Embassy in Iceland moved quickly to assist Iceland in handling the procurement and transportation of medical goods in China. We have also coordinated six Chinese organizations and companies to donate medical face masks, disposable protective gowns and medical face shields with a total value of 35 million krona. The overseas Chinese in Iceland cared about their homeland, and the Icelandic Overseas Chinese Association, overseas scholars and students together donated nearly 1.57 million krona to support Wuhan for their fight against the pandemic. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to our countrymen and friends who supported China's fight towards COVID-19, and to those who cared about and supported the sound development of bilateral relations.

The year 2020 has witnessed a fast-changing global landscape. The world is battling the COVID-19 pandemic as it goes through profound changes never seen in a century and witnessing growing instabilities and uncertainties with protectionism and unilateralism on the rise and multilateral mechanisms under attack. COVID-19 reminds us that we are living in an interconnected global village with a common stake. All countries are closely connected and we share a common future. We should embrace the vision of a community with a shared future in which everyone is bound together. China continues to be a true follower of multilateralism and firmly upholds the UN-centered international system. China pursues open and inclusive development, remains committed to building an open world economy, and upholds the multilateral trading regime with the World Trade Organization as the cornerstone. China pursues innovative, coordinated, green and open development, and will adopt more vigorous policies and measures, aiming to have CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. China is willing to strengthen international cooperation with countries around the world in the fields of upholding multilateralism, free trade, addressing climate change and sustainable development as to create a community with a shared future for mankind. Together, we could create a better future for the world! .

China's development registered remarkable achievements and impressed the world;China's development enjoys bright future and can never be stopped. We will continue to adhere to the path of peaceful development, and will never seek hegemony or expansionism. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Iceland. I believe that with the joint efforts of both sides, China-Iceland relations will enter a new stage. I hope that the virus will be defeated in the near future, and people around the world will build a better future for mankind with greater enthusiasm.
