Chinese Ambassador Jin Zhijian in Iceland Meets with Mayor of Reykjanesbær

On July 22th, Chinese Ambassador Jin Zhijian met with Mr. Kjartan Kjartansson, Mayor of Reykjanesbær, in the Chinese Embassy in Iceland. They exchanged views on enhancing exchanges and cooperation between both sides.

Ambassador Jin happily recalled his visit to Reykjanesbær in April 2019, asked about the economic and social impacts with COVID-19 in the local community and handed over to Mr. Kjartansson the masks offered by Xianyang City of China. He pointed out that China was the first country where the COVID-19 broke out, and currently the pandemic was well contained in China with effective prevention and control measures. Although China's GDP fell by 6.8% in the first quarter of this year due to the pandemic, our economy bounced back with 3.2% growth in the second quarter. China was the first major economy in the world to recover from the fallout of the pandemic, which will surely bring confidence and opportunities for cooperation to Iceland and the rest of the world. As the friendship city of Reykjanesbær, Xianyang was keen to offer Reykjanesbær possible help to fight the pandemic and willing to strengthen the friendly ties with expanding people-to-people and business exchanges. The two cities could explore more cooperation opportunities to meet the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Iceland in 2021.

Mr. Kjartansson thanked the Embassy and Xianyang for their valuable support in this critical moment to face the common challenge of pandemic, which elaborated the profound friendship between the two cities. He looked forward to more cooperation in trade, people-to-people exchanges and tourism.
